08:58IR’s New Fully-Protected High-Side Intelligent Power Switches for Automotive Improve Power Density and Response Time

International Rectifier, a world leader in power management technology, today introduced a new family of fully-protected, high-side intelligent power switches (IPS) that leverage next-generation silicon in enhanced packaging to deliver improved power density and response times. The new IPS60xx family is designed for tough automotive applications, including transmission and gearbox, solenoid drivers; lighting control; and brushed DC motor control for seats, window lifts, and wipers.

“Our new fully protected single-chip devices deliver impressive gains in RDS(on) and consume much less board area for the overall solution. For example, the full-featured IPS6011 delivers a maximum on-state resistance of 14mOhms in a DPak,” said Anthony Murray, IR’s technical marketing manager for automotive components.

The IPS60xxPBF family integrates power MOSFETs with a host of standard protection features for over-current, over-temperature, ESD, and active clamp. An integrated charge pump allows the device to be driven in high-side topologies without additional components. The new IPS family also features reverse battery protection, actively turning on the output MOSFET during a reverse battery event. This feature almost eliminates current flow through the body diode and significantly reduces power dissipation in the part during an event, improving reliability and again eliminating the need for more components. Finally, the new IPS devices provide diagnostic feedback to the microcontroller, allowing detection of basic faults such as open load and short circuit.

All devices are RoHs compliant and Q100-qualified for automotive applications and are available in a variety of packages.

08:21High Integration, 250mA Automotive LDO with Boost Preregulator Operates Seamlessly from 3.5V Cold Crank to 80V Load Dump
Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX5092 low-quiescent-current, low-dropout (LDO) regulator with a boost preregulator. The device provides a regulated 3.3V (MAX5092A), 5V (MAX5092B), or adjustable output voltage from a 3.5V to 72V input voltage. This wide operating-input-voltage range allows for true buck-boost operation and provides uninterrupted power during key-off, cold-crank, and load-dump conditions in a harsh automotive environment. The MAX5092 also significantly reduces the size and cost of large bulk capacitors commonly used at the input of the electronic control units (ECUs) to ride through the "cold-crank" duration.

The LDO regulator is capable of providing up to a 250mA output current, and it consumes only 65µA when the battery is healthy and the boost preregulator is completely turned off. In shutdown mode, the MAX5092's quiescent current drops to 5µA. The boost preregulator output voltage is preset to 7V and can be externally adjusted up to 11V, while the LDO regulator output voltage can be adjusted from 1.5V to 9V. When the voltage at the input of the MAX5092 drops below the desired boost-converter output voltage, the boost converter is enabled and provides a boosted output voltage to power the LDO regulator. The buck-boost operation achieved by this combination of LDO and boost preregulator significantly reduces component count and size, thus saving space and cost.

Further cost and space savings are achieved by the MAX5092's high level of integration. This device integrates a blocking diode and needs no external boost converter. It also has a power-on-reset circuit with an externally programmable timeout period and includes output-overload, short-circuit, and thermal protection.

The MAX5092 is specified for operation over the -40°C to +125°C automotive temperature range and is available in a thermally enhanced, 5mm x 5mm, 16-pin TQFN package capable of dissipating 2.7W at an ambient temperature of +70°C. Prices start at $1.48 (1000-up, FOB USA).
