Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today announced that Silicon Image Inc., a leader in the secure distribution, presentation and storage of high-definition content, selected Agilent equipment for High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) Compliance Test Specification (CTS) 1.3a source and sink compliance testing and characterization in its HDMI Authorized Test Center. The 1.3a version of the HDMI CTS was released in November 2006.
The system selected is used for manual and automated HDMI physical-layer compliance tests, as well as for margin-test and characterization for R&D and test services. Target customers for Silicon Image and Agilent include consumer-electronics, semiconductor and cable manufacturers.
Key elements of the solution installed at Silicon Image's HDMI Authorized Test Center (ATC) include Infiniium oscilloscopes, a ParBERT-based Transition Minimized Differential Signaling (TMDS) signal generator, the bus test automation software N5990A and HDMI-specific accessories, including the new N1080A series Test Point Access Assembly (TPA) adapters and cable emulators. The integrated system is controlled conveniently via point-and-click operations.
Joseph Lias, vice president for Silicon Image and responsible for the ATCs, explained why the Agilent products were selected: "The Infiniium oscilloscope software [N5399A] provides an industry-first integrated equalizer, as well as jitter-separation capabilities for accurate total-jitter extrapolation. This ensures in-depth characterization of HDMI source devices. The E4887A HDMI TMDS signal generator allows the most complete HDMI receiver characterization with its unique, fully integrated and instant-use jitter-injection capabilities on TMDS clock and data lanes. Its fast calibration time and test throughput increase productivity up to 50 percent.
"Agilent provides crucial accessories such as the new N1080A TPA adapters, which provide the highest bandwidth available on the market," he added. "This allows Silicon Image to measure the true performance of the tested products by overcoming the limitations of existing adapters. The HDMI configuration of the test automation software platform [N5990A] combines the performance of the test hardware with the convenience of PC operation. In addition, the external test controller ensures rapid calibration and measurements, and provides advanced data management."
"Agilent set the de-facto standard for HDMI CTS 1.3a testing," said Siegfried Gross, vice president and general manager of Agilent's Digital Verification Solutions Division. "Users in all sales regions acknowledge and appreciate the integrated, whole solution that delivers the signal quality, performance, ease-of-use and fast test times required by professional users."
The Agilent test solution setup supports the test needs for HDMI, as specified in the HDMI Compliance Test Specification version 1.3a, and is recommended in the CTS 1.3a.

Just a couple weeks ago, Samsung announced it is sampling 16 Gb NAND memory and will start mass production during the first quarter of 2007; today; the world's second largest Flash manufacturer, Toshiba, jumped on board, saying it will also be offering 8 and 16 Gb NAND memory to customers just a month later. Toshiba's 16 Gb modules were developed in conjunction with partner SanDisk, and utilize a 56-nanometer process—that's not quite as dense as the 50-nanometer process used by Samsung's parts, but may offer Toshiba a cost advantage, as least in the short term, if it's able to turn out its memory at lower prices than its rival. Toshiba aims to control 40 percent of the NAND flash memory market by 2008. The higher capacity 8 and 16 Gb modules are seen as crucial to the development of more sophisticated portable electronics products like digital cameras, portable media players, and camcorders, as well as to hybrid hard disk drives which combine Flash-based storage with traditional disk based media. The 8 Gb and 16 Gb modules offer total memory capacities of 1 and 2 GB respectively (Gb = gigabits, while GB = gigabytes; there are 8 bits to a byte), effectively enabling manufacturers to double the storage capacities of existing devices without significant increases in size or power consumption. Philips Lumileds High-Power, White LED
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Philips Lumileds, the creator of the 350 mA high-power LED, continues its innovation by developing more powerful LEDs capable of long life when driven at 1000 mA - 2000 mA and higher. This innovation improves the light efficacy and the light quality, all while offering the lower cost required by many applications. Notable in the performance numbers is the CCT which is significantly lower than those typically reported. These results clearly demonstrate Philips Lumileds' progress in both light output and light quality.
Philips Lumileds achieved the record results for white LEDs by combining several new and innovative technologies it has developed. The first devices using these technologies will be introduced in a new generation of products during this quarter. These new technologies will continue to proliferate in new, and existing, products throughout the next 12-18 months. Philips Lumileds breakthroughs in epitaxy, device physics, phosphor, and packaging technologies are critical to delivering the performance required of LEDs as they continue their growth into a preferred light source.
The light output performance announced today and available to the industry in the near future, is 17 times greater at the same power than was available in 1999 when Philips Lumileds introduced the first high-power LED. While performance numbers continue to increase for low power LEDs, operating at lower currents such as 20mA, high-power LEDs are required to deliver the quality and quantity of light required for today's and tomorrow's lighting applications.
