AMD has launched its 6th Generation A-Series processor, described as the first high performance Accelerated Processing Unit in an SoC design.
Codenamed 'Carrizo', the processor is said to feature a number of technology firsts, including the first use of High Efficiency Video Coding hardware decode to support notebooks, the first Heterogeneous Systems Architecture 1.0 compliant design and the first APU capable of supporting ARM's TrustZone security system.
AMD says the device features its Excavator cores and the third generation of its Graphics Core Next architecture. Three models are available. The FX features 12 cores – four CPUs and eight GPUs – Radeon 7 graphics and runs at clock rates of up to 3.4GHz. The A10 and A8 have 10 cores – four CPUs and six GPUs – Radeon 6 graphics and run at 3.2GHz and 3GHz respectively. All models have a 2Mbyte L2 cache.
