ARM has bought Wicentric and Sunrise Micro Devices, two US companies whose technology is said to complement its existing low power communications offerings. The IP from both companies will be integrated to form the ARM Cordio portfolio.
Wicentric specialises in Bluetooth Smart software solutions, including a Bluetooth protocol stack and profiles that enable interoperable smart products to be crated. It also offers a link layer for silicon integration. In 2010, Wicentric was the first independent protocol stack provider to receive Bluetooth 4.0 qualification.
Sunrise Micro Devices has developed radio IP solutions, including a prequalified, self contained radio block and related firmware. The approach was intended to provide developers with technology that allows them to build new devices quickly. The company's radios operate from a supply of less than 1V, bringing longer operating time from batteries or harvested energy.
