Analog Devices announced the availability of its ADF4158 PLL synthesizer which enables implementation of FMCW (frequency modulated continuous wave) radar systems. FMCW radar systems are used in automotive, aerospace, military, industrial and communications applications to remotely measure the relative distance and speed of external objects.
FMCW radar systems can deliver detection and ranging at lower power levels compared to traditional pulsed radar approaches thereby offering cost advantage. The ADF4158 is a 6.1GHz programmable device that can be configured to suit individual FMCW radar system designers’ needs. Implementation of an FMCW radar system using the ADF4158 produces a highly linear ramp profile that is completely independent of VCO linearity.
Key Features
25-bit modulus allows sub-hertz frequency resolution
Frequency and phase modulation capability
Generates saw-tooth and triangular waveforms in the frequency domain
Generates parabolic ramp
Generates ramp with frequency-shift keying (FSK) superimposed
Generates ramp with two different sweep rates
Ramp delay, ramp frequency readback and ramp interruption
2.7 V to 3.3 V power supply
Separate VP allows extended tuning voltage
Availability and tools
The ADF4158 PLL synthesizer is available in a 4mm x 4mm 24 lead LFCSP package and is priced at $4.88 per unit in 1,000 unit quantities and $4.14 per unit in 10,000 unit quantities. It is supported by ADI’s popular ADIsimPLL, a free downloadable design tool, that enables the evaluation of PLL products.
The ADF4158 is well suited for use together with ADI’s portfolio of high performance automotive signal processing and conditioning products including the ADSP-BF531 Blackfin® Processor, and the AD7357 14-bit 4.2 MSPS analog-to-digital converter.
