Renesas Technology announced the development of the Flexible Movie Player video/audio playback software package for embedded systems using the SH-Mobile application processor for mobile phones. The software will be available from July 2008 in Japan. Flexible Movie Player is software designed for the SH-Mobile, which incorporates full hardware acceleration supporting the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (referred to below as “H.264”) video compression standard. It more efficiently extracts the video processing performance of the SH-Mobile than the video playback middleware previously released by Renesas. In particular, Flexible Movie Player can deliver high-quality video reproduction even of content requiring high-volume processing by the CPU. In addition, support for playback of MP4 video files, which are widely used on mobile phones, is provided as standard, and modules are available for extending support to newer file formats in the future. This makes it possible for mobile phone handsets to provide high-quality playback of multiple types of video content.

Emerson Network Power has expanded its portfolio of ac-dc power adapters with the launch of a 72 watt model. The AD72 power adapter features a universal 90-264 Vac input and produces a single, fully regulated 16 Vdc output capable of delivering up to 4.5 A continuously. AD72 freestanding ac-dc power adapters provide a very flexible, pre-approved power solution for a wide variety of portable and desktop applications, including instrumentation, test and measurement systems, telecommunications and computer peripherals. The AD72 uses a high efficiency switch-mode design that complies with the Blue Angel requirement; it has a typical efficiency of 84 percent. The adapter is equipped with a 2-pin (type C8) IEC320 ac input receptacle and features an internal ac input fuse.

 The dc output is provided via a 6 ft (1.85 m) cable fitted with a standard 2.1 mm right-angle barrel plug. AD72 power adapters have a full load ambient operating temperature range of +5°C to +40°C without de-rating. The adapters are comprehensively protected against overvoltage, overpower and short-circuit conditions, with automatic recovery. They are equipped with an internal EMI filter and comply with the rigorous EN55022-B and FCC part 15 Level B EMC standards for conducted noise, and also meet applicable electromagnetic immunity standards, including EN61000-4-2 and -4 levels 2. The power adapters also carry a comprehensive set of safety approvals, including UL/CSA/NEMKO 60950-1. Pricing starts at US$35 in OEM quantities.

AMS Technologies announces the availability of the new version of CoolitPCB, a software for board analysis developed by Daat Research Corporation. CoolitPCB calculates fine mesh models in the time it takes competitors to deliver coarse grid answers. The software costs $5900 for a perpetual license. The tool handles transient and steady state laminar and turbulent flows and accounts for forced and free convection, conduction and radiation. It reports component junction temperature, case temperatures, shows 3D airflow and temperature distribution. CoolitPCB can also import PCB artwork (traces). The tool is fully integrated with thermal design software, Coolit.
